Rey’s true lineage has been a question everyone has asked even before The Force Awakens hit theaters, and now it’s confirmed that The Last Jedi will address this mystery. Many have theorized that Rey could be connected to almost everybody in the Star Wars Universe, whether it was the daughter of Luke, Han, or Leia, a reincarnated Anakin, the granddaughter of Obi-Wan, or from royal lineage. The speculation was endless.
GMA asked director Rian Johnson point blank whether or not fans will discover who Rey’s parents are. Rian wouldn’t confirm or deny their identities, but here’s what he had to say:
“It’s something that is absolutely going to be addressed… The other part of it is there are lots of surprises in this movie and lots of twists and turns, and I really want people to experience those when they see the movie for the first time. How we address that and how you feel about it and what happens with that is one of them.”
MTV went on to ask Ridley about this same topic, but they didn’t ask her about the parentage of Rey in The Last Jedi, they asked her if she was surprised when she found out. This was Daisy’s response:
“The one thing I have seen, cause I did some ADR last week, was a little clip of something I didn’t know was going to happen in it and I was like, ‘Oh wow, okay.’ I think quite a few questions people have are answered in this.”
Many people expect Rey lineage to be a major plot point in the sequel, but the film’s first trailer doesn’t hint at this. If the marketing can stick with this, then Johnson’s hope of this being a huge surprise may just come to be.
