At 3pm PST Yesterday, Nintendo had their Nintendo Direct presentation in order to talk about their Switch exclusives, ARMS and Splatoon 2, as well as some upcoming 3DS titles. You can see the list of titles here. However, many viewers tuned in hoping to hear the announcement of some highly anticipated Nintendo titles and they were left disappointed. But don’t fret, it’s highly likely that a new game announcement will be made at E3 this June.
The presentation was very ARMS/Splatoon 2 heavy, but that was expected. These games were announced a while back and a release date for these games was due. But it seemed like viewers wanted something more. So the question is, when are we getting the next Metroid or Super Smash Bros game? Let’s look at what we know.
The last Metroid game was a spin-off story for the 3DS announced at E3 in 2015 and released in the summer of 2016. The last Metroid console game was Metroid: Other M announced at E3 in 2009 and released in the summer of 2010 for the Wii.
Super Smash Bros.
As for Super Smash Bros, a title has consistently been released for each Nintendo console, starting with the Nintendo 64, with the most recent title for Wii U announced at E3 2011, unveiled at E3 2013 and released in 2014.
So if they were going to announce one of these games, it’s more likely to be announced at E3 and Nintendo did say they have something big planned this year.
Reggis Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America president, said so himself in an interview with Fox News:
“E3 is always a big time for Nintendo. We look at each E3 as a unique opportunity to tell our story. And we’re gonna have a big E3 this year. We’re going to be showcasing a variety of games. We will have experiences for…consumers will be able to attend the show for the very first time. So I’m not gonna tell you all of the various games and all of our little secrets for E3, but I can tell you that E3 is going to be a major opportunity for us to showcase not only Nintendo Switch, but also content coming to Nintendo 3DS.”
Reggie Fils-Aime has also said in a Facebook Livestream and noted by Gamespot:
“Smash is obviously one of our best-selling franchises. What we say is the philosophy that Nintendo has from a development standpoint is that for every platform, we want to have at least one (each) of our classic franchises. There’s gonna be one great Super Mario experience, there’s gonna be great Zelda experience, so you can expect, you can anticipate at some point in the future, who knows when, that all of our franchises will be addressed. We know that the fans love these games, love this content, so stay tuned.”
So as we can see from past releases, Nintendo likes to reveal games at E3 and it’s really looking like Nintendo has something big planned this year. Hopefully that something is the announcement of a highly anticipated game for the Switch. I don’t want to tell you to get your hopes up, but I feel like this all but confirms that we could get either Metroid or Super Smash Bros announced at E3. Please don’t let me down Nintendo.
