In the season finale, we saw Cersei Lannister rise to power through death and destruction to sit on the Throne as the queen of Westeros. Season 7 promotional images feature the new queen on the iron throne with her watchful twin brother alongside her. One popular fan theory about prophesied downfall of Cersei is starting to gain traction.
It has been theorized that Sir Jaime Lannister could be the very one to end his sister’s reign of terror. This theory has been circulating amongst the Game Of Thrones fanbase for a while now and actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who portrays Jaime, seems to support this. Here’s what Waldau had to say to Mashable:
“I mean I don’t think he — I’m just saying it’s a valid theory. I can see it makes sense, it has a beautiful — it’s a nice circle [that] they are born together in the womb and then he kills her at the end…It makes sense.”
Coster-Waldu also touched on the similarity to Jaime Lannister’s betrayal execution of the Mad King Aerys but also quickly pointed out that it might not sit well with the character progression:
“You could say that could — that the motivation for doing that would be the same for killing Cersei, but I haven’t seen anything yet before Season 7 that would make me believe that he was capable of doing that.”
Game of Thrones showrunners have attempted to keep fans on Jaime’s side, most recently breaking the hearts of fans when his estranged daughter Marcella was killed. The prophecy introduced at the beginning of season 5 suggest that Cersei “Little Brother” would “wrap his hands about your pale white throat and choke the life from you.” Cersei believed that Tyrion would be the one to cause her downfall, but this could be Jaime. After all, though they are twins he was born after his sister.
The Kingslayer has been humanized during his receptive journey. His sister, Cersei is a whole different story. Her genocidal tendencies have definitely earned her a quick, swift death, and there’s nobody better to deliver said death than her brother, Jaime.
Series 7 of Game Of Thrones Season 7 begins on July 16th.
