[UPDATE] DOCTOR WHO: Could The 13th Doctor Be Black and Female?

[UPDATE] Michaela Coel has denied she’s the next Doctor on Twitter.

Doctor Who’s tenth season will be filled with goodbyes as it returns for its tenth season. Showrunner Steven Moffat and 12th Doctor, Peter Capaldi will be exiting the TARDIS after this season so big changes are ahead. How big might you ask? Moffat will be replaced by Broadchurch showrunner Chris Chibnall, but we don’t know who Peter Capaldi will be regenerating into quite yet. Many have been rumored like Tilda Swinton, BenWhishaw, and Kris Marshall, but none have been confirmed.  According to Nerdist Chibnall might be eyeing someone completely different.

Nerdist reports the actress closest to signing is Michaela Coel (Chewing Gum). If these reports are true, this would make Coel not only the first female Doctor but she would be setting history by being the show’s first Black Doctor also. This new era of Doctor Who is already seeing the first openly gay companion with Bill in the start of season 10. This could be a welcome shake-up for the show. Recently, while promoting Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Karen Gillan spoke about needing more diversity in the TARDIS and she would also like to see a female of a different race picking up the Sonic Screwdriver. Both former and current Doctor’s David Tennant and Capaldi himself would also support seeing a female at the helm of the TARDIS.

This has yet to be confirmed by the BBC, but the rumor does come from a “source close to production” Nerdist says. However, some may not be happy with this casting choice if this were to happen. There is some old school Doctor Who purist that may balk at the idea of a young, female, Black Doctor, but before anyone gets too worked up or excited for change this is still just a rumor.
