Call Of Duty Turning Into A MCU Like Franchise

Activision Blizzard are looking to make Call of Duty game franchise into a franchise akin to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Call of Duty is a popular game franchise which started in 2003 and has 25 titles in the series.  The series is a FPS (first-person shooter) and is most known as a multiplayer online game.  It has become popular among competitive tournament players.

Co-presidents of Activision Blizzard Studios, Stacey Sher and Nick van Dyk, are the two heading up the project.

Sher’s credits as a producer include Pulp Fiction, Django Unchained and Erin Brockovich. She was also nominated for two Oscars.  Van Dyk played a role in acquiring Marvel and Star Wars franchises while he was a senior executive at Disney.

Sher told the Guardian they have the years plotted out and have already put together a group of writers.  However, Sher mentioned the movies will take cues from the game series like Black Ops and Modern Warfare.  The movies will include elements of Black Ops’ story behind the story and Modern Warfare’s fighting a war with the eyes of the world upon you.  She was also clear that they are making new stories and not just transferring the game’s story over.

“It’s going to have the same sort of high-adrenaline, high-energy aesthetic as the game, but it’s not a literal adaptation. It’s a much more broad and inclusive, global in scope … a big, tentpole Marvel-esque movie,” Van Dyk told the Guardian.

The team are also looking to intertwine the universes together and have Easter eggs like something which would be in a Marvel film.

Sher and Van Dyk are also working on making a historical TV series based on World War II or Vietnam.  This series would mirror Marvel’s Netflix series model.  This would give another opportunity to add more Easter eggs and content to the universe.

Activision Blizzard are also looking into their other IP’s potential for movie or TV series opportunities.  The Overwatch game has be mentioned as such.  Overwatch is another popular FPS with a large fan base.  The game includes a large group of cartoonish characters. This would lend itself better to a younger fan base than the Call of Duty franchise.

However, Overwatch does not have a story included in-game and instead chose to tell the narrative through YouTube videos, fiction released online and comic books.  Using this path to tell a story leaves a lot of holes which could be filled through a movie or TV series.

“Not to keep quoting my former employer, but the most recent Star Wars movie [Rogue One], was developed around the concept of somebody had to get the plans of the Death Star to Princess Leia. You have that overall construct but there were new characters, there were new plot lines, there was a new history,” Van Dyk told the Guardian.

The first film of this new potential franchise could begin filming as early as 2018.
