While Fox’s course for their struggling Fantastic Four franchise remains unclear, it seems they are full steam ahead with their X-Men properties. Today it was announced that Fox plans to release three X-Men films during 2018.
April 13, 2018: New Mutants
June 1, 2018: Deadpool 2
November 2, 2018: Dark Phoenix
In a market flooded with comic book properties, Fox has carved out portions of the schedule that keep them out of conflict with either Marvel Studios or Warner Bros. Each of these films is curretly clear of other comic book movies by at least a couple of weeks on either side.
New Mutants, helmed by Josh Boone, recently began pre-production ahead of a May start in Montreal. Rumors have swirled about cast for over a year, with names like Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) and Anna Taylor-Joy (Split) popping up most frequently. The film is expected to be thematically and aesthetically different from the long-running X-Men team films.
Deadpool 2 will see Ryan Reynolds return as the Merc with a Mouth and star alongside Josh Brolin, who will play the time-traveling mutant, Cable. The studio seems to have big plans for Cable, as he will almost certainly lead their developing X-Force film as well.
Dark Phoenix is expected to move the core group of X-Men introduced in Age of Apocalypse into the 1990s. The story will center on the developing and dangerous powers of Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) and her efforts to control them. Details of the plot are still under wraps, but with the Dark Phoenix story comes the opportunity to explore some of the more interesting and cosmic corners of the X-Men universe, something I hope they finally do.
