Valient has taken one of their most successful franchises and has decided to start fresh.  With a clean slate and new minds at work, they’ve rebooted the story as well as the character’s armor.

“Born under the oppressive thumb of the Roman Empire, Aric of Dacia learned warfare at an early age. It was amid such violence that he was abducted by an alien race. Forced into slavery, he survived where others perished. His escape would come from bonding with a weapon of immeasurable power: the X-O Manowar armor. With it, he returned to Earth…only to find himself stranded in the modern day.

But that was a lifetime ago.

Now, far from home on a strange and primitive new world, Aric has begun a new life. Liberated from his past, he tends to his crops. Free from war. Free from violence. Free from the armor.

But the machinery of death marches his way once again. Conscripted into an alien army and thrown into an unforgiving conflict, the fury inside him finds voice as he is forced to embrace the armor once more. With it, he will decimate armies, topple empires and incite interplanetary warfare as he rises from SOLDIER to GENERAL to EMPEROR to VISIGOTH. They wanted a weapon. He will give them war!”

To start, the story starts off with Aric of Dacia working as an everyday farmer.  unfortunately, his simple life is bombarded by war as he is recruited without say.  The soldiers see our main character is left without his right hand; as they say ” well, you have feet don’t you? March!”  I didn’t know what to expect from this character.  I didn’t see him much as a fighter.  Boy, was I wrong.

Even without his right hand, he is a formidable opponent.  Most of the recruited soldiers fell died as soon as they touched the battlefield.  But, Aric is smart and strategic; leading the charge to kill the enemies leader.  MATT KINDT writes an amazing story that builds up an even better cliffhanger that leaves you wanting more.  All I could ask myself was: If Aric is this tough without his mana suit and a missing hand, what is he like with full power?  I can’t wait to see in the next issue.

Lastly, the story is complemented by the art of TOMÁS GIORELLO.  It’s clean and fresh as he draws out the horrors of an apocalyptic war of the future.  His art seems like the real thing.

Like earlier stated, this was the first X-O Mana War issue I had the pleasure of reading.  I can’t wait to continue this story and see what is waiting beyond the horizon.  The whole time the story is progressing the main character is reframing from using the suit, but by the end, he has no choice.
