EXCLUSIVE: New Mutants Characters Breakdowns

Hot off the heels of our exclusive first look at casting breakdowns for Marvel’s The Inhumans, we’ve got our hands on the breakdowns for another Marvel comics adaptation: Fox’s New Mutants. This spinoff of the X-Men movies—based on the original Chris Claremont run of the New Mutants comics—is deep in preproduction and casting is in full swing, with one major role already cast. Check out the video to see Joe and Jessica go through the actual breakdowns, or read on as I go through the list of characters you’ll be seeing when New Mutants hits screens.

Cannonball

Cannonball New Mutants
[CHRIS]Male, 17 years old, Actor must be an adult (18 or over) or a legally emancipated minor; Tall, corn-fed Kentucky kid.

Cannonball, real name Sam Guthrie. He generates thermal energy that he then releases through his skin, launching him through the air like—you guessed it—a cannonball. In the comics Cannonball actually started out as a member of the Hellfire Club hired to fight the New Mutants, before deciding to join them. It’ll be interesting to see if that’s how the character is introduced in the movie.

Magik

Magik New Mutants

[ANNA]Female, 17 years old, Actor must be an adult (18 or over) or a legally emancipated minor; Russian, sexy, with an obvious mean streak.

Illyana Nikolievna Rasputina, aka Magik. She’s Colossus’s sister, so we’ve got a tangential connection to Deadpool here now, since that’s where the comic-accurate Russian version of Colossus was introduced. Magik has a variety of powers, including the ability to teleport herself and others through time and space (would’ve come in handy during Days of Future Past), various magic spells, magic armor, and a soulsword (seen above) that she forged in Limbo. Good for her.

Sunspot

Sunspot New Mutants

[ROB]Male, 16 years old, Actor must be an adult (18 or over) or a legally emancipated minor; Brazilian, cool, confident and extremely handsome.

Sunspot (Roberto da Costa) has actually been seen onscreen before, in the future set part of Days of Future Past. He was played by Brazilian actor Adan Canto in that film, but will be recast for New Mutants. In the comics, Sunspot can absorb and harness solar energy, turning his skin jet black and granting him super-strength.

Wolfsbane

Wolfsbane

[JESSICA]Female, 16 years old, Actor must be an adult (18 or over) or a legally emancipated minor; British, punk rock shorn red hair, waif-like.

Rahne Sinclair, aka Wolfsbane. Her power is pretty self-explanatory: she’s basically a werewolf, except she can completely control her transformation between human and wolf forms.

Mirage

Moonstar New Mutants

Lastly, we have Danielle Moonstar, know at different points as either Psyche or Mirage. We don’t have a breakdown for this character, but she is in the movie. Why no breakdown? Because the character has already been cast. Dani has empathic powers that let her communicate with animals, and to manifest people’s fears as external illusions. She’s like a land Aquaman with bonus psychic powers.

And there you have it: your core lineup for New Mutants. Who are you most excited to see? Are there any characters you’re disappointed won’t be appearing in the movie? Let us know in the comments.
