Today Crystal Dynamics announced via Twitter that Rhianna Pratchett, the lead writer for the 2013 Tomb Raider reboot and the 2015 sequel Rise of the Tomb Raider has departed from the company in order to pursue “new adventures”.
You can check out the official announcement posted from their Twitter page below:
Rhianna Pratchett also commented on the announcement, sharing similar sentiments as above:
“I want to thank the @CrystalDynamics team for their dedication esp. @jstafford @josefkstories & @noahmhughes. Guys, it’s been emotional. But, I like to think we did some good things. Maybe shifted the gaming landscape a wee bit. And that feels damn good.”
Although it sounds like both two parties parted on good terms, this announcement signals what can be construed as a massive loss to the recently rebooted franchise. The 2013 reboot of Tomb Raider received lots of praise for making Lara Croft a more fully fleshed out character for all players to enjoy. The 2015 sequel Rise of the Tomb Raider was selected as a winner of the 2016 Videogame Writing Award. Rhianna Pratchett’s stamp on the franchise has definitely been made since the relaunch.
Who do you think may be taking over as the lead writer for the Tomb Raider Franchise when things start moving forward? Does anyone come to mind? Let us know in the comments below.
