Even if you’ve already seen Rogue One, there might be one more twist you didn’t see coming in the works: Felicity Jones apparently has a sequel option in her contract.
This is surprising, first of all, because Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has already said that the film will not have a sequel. It becomes even more head-scratching if you’ve seen Rogue One, which already has a pretty tidy ending.
As The Hollywood Reporter notes in breaking the news, Rogue One actors’ reps confirmed that Lucasfilm has held firm that there will be no sequel—despite the fact that, as Jones told the publication, “It’s set up for one. I mean, there’s a number in the title.”
It’s not impossible to imagine circumstances under which Jones could star in another Star Wars story—but it’s also a fraught prospect. Trying too hard to weave together too many stories can sometimes make the whole feel flimsier, or even fall apart. Then again, that is the name of the cinematic universe game, isn’t it? Perhaps this is something to mull over between Star Wars re-watches.
