#FlashbackFriday – Punk Music meets Star Wars

How geeky are you? Would you put up a poster of your favorite geekdom on your wall? What about wearing a t-shirt of the characters? What about a tattoo? I’m sure you’re screaming “YES!” at the computer as you read this article.

Well, in my eyes at least, the ultimate way to show your love to your geekiness is to make a song about it and that’s just what Blink 182 did on their album Dude Ranch! Do you remember Dude Ranch? That had all the early hits of this 1997 release such as Dammit, Josie, and Pathetic. In this album, their is a hidden gem for all you geeks that are Punk Rockers. The song title is called “A New Hope.” One of my favorite lyrics in this song is:

But when you were available, I was

Drinking Colt 45’s with Lando

I was hanging out in the cantina

On Mos Eisley

Princess Leia, where are you tonight?

And who’s laying there by your side?

Every night I fall asleep with you

And I wake up alone

i swear I laugh every time I hear it. Now, it’s doesn’t say it but I do question wether song writers Mark Hoppus, Tom DeLonge, and Scott Raynor were referring to Luke Skywalker or Han Solo. I KNOW! I KNOW! Technically, it’s Han Solo. What throw me into that thought was the fact that they say:

I’d even walk naked through

The deserts of Tatooine

What do you guys think? Was the band such hardcore fans of Star Wars to make that they were singing about the smuggler that made the Kessel Run in 12 Parsecs? Or should we be quoting Fanboys and say, “THEY WE’RE SIBLINGS, THE WE’RE SIBLINGS YOU SICK BASTARD!” Tell us after hearing this amazing Ode to Star Wars.
