Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, the new film directed by Luc Besson, premiered its first trailer on Thursday, and unsurprisingly, it looks visually hypnotizing.
The teaser is set to the Beatles’ “Because,” which already conjures up visions of looking through a kaleidoscope without having to see anything visually. In typical Besson fashion, I had to watch it more than once to even realize there was action going on since I was too busy drinking in all the environments.
And there are many. We see a Jakku-style planet with sleazy-looking aliens. There’s a club with a shape-shifting Rihanna (and yes, that is actually Rihanna). There are some relatively normal scenes on beaches featuring Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne, but they’re immediately overwhelmed by fights with aliens reminiscent of 1960s sci-fi.
Also starring Clive Owen and Ethan Hawke, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planetswill hit theaters July 21, 2017.
