After the announcement of Johnny Depp’s casting, potentially as Grindelwald because who else is he honestly going to play, this next announcement should come as no surprise to us Harry Potter fans.
Given the time period Newt Scamander’s antics take place in and the fact that it has been confirmed that Fantastic Beasts 2 will be in Europe, the question of whether or not Albus Dumbledore was going to show up was on the tip of everyone’s tongues.
Guess what? He will appear.
David Yates, the director of Fantastic Beasts & Where to Find Them, confirmed this information via a press junket for the upcoming film:
In the second movie Dumbledore comes back. He’s got a couple of good scenes with Newt… We’re discussing who would play Dumbledore, any suggestions would be good. [Laughs]

I am very curious to see how they will interweave Dumbledore and Grindelwald’s relationship while also maintaining a focus on Scamander and his various beasts and adventures. Considering how much information we have on their relationship, shenanigans will definitely be going down if they are going to be a significant part of Scamander’s film series. It’s too early yet in the Harry Potter universe for the epic climatic battle between Dumbledore and Scamander, but it definitely isn’t too early to have them pop up on the scene.
I also have no idea who would be the best casting for the role. Richard Harris and Michael Gambon left their mark on the role, but this time we need someone who is younger and considerably more volatile. Young Dumbledore was definitely not as level headed and more angsty than what we recall from the films.
For now, we need to wait and see who they select. I am curious to see how public they will make the information after the fall out surrounding Depp’s casting. Regardless, I can’t wait to see what happens.
What do you think of this information? Who do you think would make a good young Albus Dumbledore? Let us know in the comments below.
