Blade Runner Sequel Title Revealed!

Yesterday we found out what Alcon Entertainment and Warner Bros. has decided to call their official Blade Runner sequel. The film is officially titled Blade Runner 2049.

We had known from previous interviews with award winning director Denis Villeneuve that the sequel was going to take place several decades ahead, so the year 2049 should make sense. This also gives us a specific time stamp for how quickly the world has fallen apart due to climate change. Why am I bringing this up? Climate change within the world of Blade Runner was mentioned heavily a couple months ago in an interview with award winning director Denis Villeneuve. When the concept art for the upcoming sequel was released, we saw more extreme weather in the artwork. Denis Villenueve explained that this is what we should expect several decades in the future of the Blade Runner world:

“The climate has gone berserk – the ocean, the rain, the snow is all toxic,” Villeneuve says. The vehicle pictured in this exclusive concept art from the sequel, Villeneuve says, is a kind of snow blower that hovers over the streets and destroys snow. He laughs. “It’s a Canadian wet dream!”

Hints of ecological disaster were in the original film, but we may get a much stronger ecological message in this upcoming sequel. For that much change to happen in 30 years, it’ll be interesting to see whether or not this influences the plot.

Now, onto the title…

I, personally, find the title to be rather meh. Call me judgemental because I know I can take it, but this is all the creative team could come up with? This is easily one of the most anticipated sequels right now and fans are watching for any news. They do not want to be disappointed. However, we have expectations. And, at least for me anyway, my expectations have not been met with this title.

Am I being overly critical? You bet! Should I judge an entire movie based off a title? No. However, I can’t help but give the stink eye to the creative team for not coming up with something more, I don’t know, creative!

Mild rant aside, now all we can do is wait to see what information we will get next. We have 364 days until the movie comes out and we are sure to get plenty of tid bits here and there until the movie’s release.

Harrison Ford, Ryan Gosling, Jared Leto, Robin Wright, Ana de Armas, Sylvia Hoeks, Carla Juri, Barkhad Abdi, and Dave Bautista are starring. The sequel is written by Hampton Fancher and Michael Green. Frank Giustra and Tim Gamble of Thunderbird Films will serve as executive producers. Ridley Scott will also executive produce along with Bill Carraro.

The movie will be released in North American on Oct. 6, 2017. What do you think of the title? What do you think of the sequel? Am I being too nitpicky? Please let me know your thoughts in the comments below.
