Ben Affleck revealed today in an interview with the Associated Press that, until further notice, the title of his upcoming Batman film would be ‘The Batman’. Although this serves as confirmation for some fans, I wouldn’t get too excited. Ben Affleck admits that the title may change in the future:
“The movie I think is going to be called ‘The Batman’. At least that’s what we’re going with right now. I might change it… That’s about all I got right now. We’re working on the script, the script is going well, I’m really excited about it.”

Title changes are nothing new in Hollywood but, personally, I would like for the title to remain ‘The Batman’ because it has a definitive ring to it. It also serves to create a feeling of mystery that I think fits well with the Batman character as a whole.
There is a lot of pressure on Ben Affleck to make sure that ‘The Batman’ doesn’t suffer from the same problems that ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’ had to contend with. The mixed reviews and the residual fallout after that movie was released in theaters puzzled Affleck, as he admitted in a chat with Fox 5 DC recently:
“It’s interesting: It was a huge hit movie — more people went to see that than any movie I’ve made in my career. It was the biggest hit of my career and then it had so much editorial negativity. Fans went, and I got a lot of positive response. It was interesting, that movie, because it was judged not necessarily on execution so much as on its tone. People seemed to want to have a lighter tone to the movie, and I thought that was interesting. Tone is not a qualitative thing. It’s subjective, right? Some tones resonate with me that might not with you. And the tone of the movie was really parallel to the Frank Miller book [The Dark Knight Returns], which I liked and thought was great. I’m glad that so many people went and so many people liked the movie.”

Considering the immense fanbase that DC has and the amount of love people have for the Batman character, it is not surprising that expectations are high. However, Ben Affleck has made a name for himself as a director by crafting thought-provoking films. He is has proven himself in interviews that he knows the source material, having mentioned wanting to tap into the World’s Greatest Detective component of the character, which hasn’t been done yet via the big screen. It will be interesting to see how ‘The Batman’ develops and where Affleck will be taking the infamous caped crusader.
There is no news as of yet as to when ‘The Batman’ is anticipated to hit theaters. We do know that Ben Affleck and DC’s Geoff Johns are still working on the script. We’ll update you as soon as we know more information about the theatrical release date.
