As much as the trailers promoted The Joker, as well as all the marketing, it was very surprising just how little The Joker showed up in Suicide Squad. According to Jared Leto, who played the character, there was actually a heap of Joker scenes that never made the final cut.
In an interview with BBC radio, Leto stated “If I were to die tomorrow, maybe the studio would roll something out. There is a rated-R or a rated-X performance in there somewhere.”
However, I do have a feeling the scenes will see the light of day when Suicide Squad comes out on home media. Or maybe we will seen them in a solo Joker film.
Speaking of the Joker, if you were curious as to the reason behind his ‘damaged’ tattoo across his forehead, David Ayer, who directed Suicide Squad, provided some insight about that.
In a recent interview with Empire, Ayer had explained the in-story origin of that mark. Which has connections to Batman V Superman.
If you watched the Batman V Superman movie, there is a scene of Bruce Wayne in the Batcave where he is looking at the costume of Robin, with the words “The joke is on you Batman” spray-painted across it. You get a sense that Robin was killed and the Joker was responsible. According to Ayer, he was.
“Joker killed Robin and the Batman basically smashes his teeth out and locks him up in Arkham Asylum,” Ayer said. “It’s in the asylum where Joker would have done the ‘damaged’ tattoo as a message to Batman saying ‘You damaged me. I was so beautiful before and now you’ve destroyed my face.’ That is where the grill comes from.”
As to whether this plot will actually appear in a future DC Cinematic Universe film? That remains to be seen.
The most interesting part about this, is that it makes you wonder which version of the Robin was killed. In the comics, it was Jason Todd in the role of Robin who ends up being killed by the Joker.
If they portray it that way in the DC Cinematic Universe, this would be pretty exciting indeed. As it could possibly mean we could see the Red Hood show up! That is just wild speculation on my part. Though it does sound pretty awesome
Suicide Squad is currently playing playing in theatres everywhere.
