When I first heard about Justice League Dark coming to the big screen, with Guillermo Del Toro originally attached to direct, I was very intrigued. Knowing his reputation with Hellboy, I had a feeling this would be something to keep an eye on.
Turns out Del Toro overloaded himself with projects and was not able to continue with the film. According to Variety, in his place as director will be Doug Liman. Liman was originally going to direct the Gambit film before he decided to leave the project. Along with a new director, the film was also get a new title of Dark Universe.
Those not familiar, Dark Universe pretty much does what it says on the tin. It features a darker version of the Justice League, featuring members such as John Constantine, Swamp Thing, Deadman, Zatanna, and Etrigan the Demon. They are tasked with handling the supernatural threats that the regular Justice League are not able to handle.
The exact plot details are unknown. What is known is that this film will be live action and it will play a major role in the DC Extended Universe.
I do not know about anyone else, but I felt jipped when the Constantine tv series was unfairly cancelled. I felt they never gave the series the chance it needed to thrive. Then again, many of the issues that Constantine had to tackle was not exactly family friendly material. I keep hoping maybe the series will get revived on Netflix or Amazon. If not, then they need to cast Matt Ryan as Constantine for Dark Universe.
I am keeping my fingers crossed this happens. No release date has been given for when Dark Universe will be released in theaters.
However if you want to get an idea of what to expect, it was announced that there will be an animated Justice League Dark film coming direct to DVD and Blu-ray in Fall of 2016. You can catch a sneak peek of that on the DVD and Blu-ray of The Killing Joke animated movie.
