Donald Glover has been slowly picking up speed in recent years since his departure from Community. His appearances recently in The Martian and Magic Mike XXL have put his face out there for mainstream audiences not familiar with his work. This recent exposure has helped contribute to the rumor mill surrounding his recent casting as an undisclosed character for the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming movie. It has also put his name out there as a top pick for the role of Lando Calrissian since it had been reported he’d be involved in the upcoming Han Solo spin-off film.
There has been no confirmation surrounding his role in either of these films. However, in an interview with Time Magazine, Donald Glover addressed the rumors surrounding his possible roles in Spider-Man: Homecoming and the Han Solo film.
It’s not a surprise that Donald Glover didn’t confirm or deny his involvement in either of the films. While it has been confirmed that he was cast in Spider-Man: Homecoming, he did not say who he would be playing. He, instead, discussed the experience of filming and how everything came in full circle:
The Internet is a strange box. It was weird to see that full circle. I only did it because I thought it was a cool role. I’m never going to do something just because. I’d rather take a risk, at least right now when I can still do that. It’s just weird.
The movie was fun to shoot. I’m glad I got the opportunity. You don’t want it to feel like some sort of affirmative action. This wasn’t that at all. I know the director, he’s doing a really good job and good ideas.
When the interview came around to the topic of Star Wars, he let nothing slip. When the interviewer asked him if the Han Solo casting rumors were true, he confirmed that they were just rumors. He did share his feelings for the Star Wars franchise and the special place it has in his heart:
I mean, I grew up on it. My dad was a big fan. I had all the toys when I was little. I had a Darth Vader with the lightsaber he has. It was cool. It’s a dynasty. It’s like the bible. I love that franchise.
I’m still not 100% sure about the rumors just being rumors. We won’t really have confirmation about the Star Wars rumors, though, until 2017 when filming begins for the Han Solo movie. In terms of who he’ll be playing in Spider-Man: Homecoming, we will just have to keep our eyes peeled for the footage and trailers that will be released until the movie’s premiere.
