The second trailer for the Doctor Strange film has been out for a few days but let’s take a little deeper look at it.
Before we look at the man we know him to be let’s look at who he was. Doctor Stephen Strange, played by Benedict Cumberbatch, is a skilled surgeon. He is highly regarded by his peers for his skill but is egotistical and selfish. His hands are extremely important to him. In the trailer there are a few close-ups of his hands. The first is of him washing his hands, then using them to pull up his surgical mask and finally he is using them to play the piano.
Strange is in a serious car accident. His hands are crushed and is told he can no longer perform surgeries. We see him in a hospital bed with metal pins in his hands. Understandability he is heartbroken. The one thing Strange takes pride in is taken away.
Every doctor or specialist Strange sees tells him the same thing. He will never have the same precision with his hands again. Therefore, Strange can not get back his old job.
He starts to look towards Eastern medicine. This is when he discovers the Ancient One played by Tilda Swinton. The Ancient One teaches Strange sorcery. She also teaches him that the world is more than people perceive. As his training progresses his hands begin to heal.
Strange doesn’t know it but he is being groomed to become the sorcerer supreme. Which means he is the baddest dude on the planet when it comes to sorcery and he gets that cool cape.
Now we get to the fun part where I answer “who the hell is that guy?”
First is the scene when the two men are discussing if “he is strong enough.” The asian man is Wong played by Benedict Wong. Wong is Strange’s butler/assistant, closest friend and is one of Strange’s most trusted allies. A good way to think of their relationship is Alfred to Bruce Wayne/Batman with less of an age gap.
The other man is Baron Mordo played by Chiwetel Ejiofor. Mordo is a gifted sorcerer and rival student of Strange as they are both actively seeking the sorcerer supreme title. Mordo is a little farther ahead of Strange so he looks to be taking on a mentor role to Strange in the film.
Rachel McAdams plays Christine Palmer aka Night Nurse. The Night Nurse character is a nurse who helps to treat heroes who are injured. She can be seen at Strange’s bedside after his accident, but she is in plain clothes. It is not clear if she is a girlfriend or just a nurse who has taken a special interest in Strange.
The villain of the film is Kaecilius played by the always evil looking Mads Mikkelsen. It is hard to give much info on Kaecilius for two reasons. The first is possible spoilers for the film and the second is he is a low level guy in the comics. He is not portrayed as a villain worthy of being the villain of a film. We will have to see how he is different than his comic book counterpart.
Alright now let’s break down that poster real quick. Strange is stepping through a portal like the one the Ancient One creates. The amulet around his necks is called the Eye of Agamotto and is very important to Strange. This amulet helps to channel his power and focus it. The pattern around the edge of the poster is in a geometric pattern similar to the one produced by one of Strange’s incantations.
This Doctor Strange trailer has me all sorts of excited as I assume you are too. I’ll see you at the theater on Nov. 4.
