The legendary thrash-metal band Slayer has paired with Dark Horse Comics to create a new three-issue comic miniseries, titled Slayer: Repentless and slated for release this winter!
Slayer, who released their latest album Repentless (on Nuclear Blast Records) back in September 2015 and filmed several music videos for the songs heard on that record, are fully onboard and actively participating in the creation of the comic series, written by Jon Schnepp of Metalocalypse fame. Guiu Vilanova (Conan the Avenger) will be handling the interior art, with Glenn Fabry providing the series with its blood-drenched cover art.
Slayer’s Kerry King told Rolling Stone in an interview that he sees the songs he writes as stories, and that “they are certainly visual”. It’s this emphasis on visual lyrics and music that inspire Slayer: Repentless, I suspect. Rolling Stone also caught up with Schnepp, who told them that the miniseries will focus on exploring sensitive subjects through “the chaos of metal”. Personally, I’m curious to see how that translates to the page!
Slayer will be at San Diego Comic Con this weekend, performing at a special sold-out concert at the House of Blues on Thursday, July 21st. They’ll also be at the convention on Friday, July 22nd, for two signing opportunities. The first signing will be held at Nuclear Blast America’s booth (#501) from 1pm – 2pm, before the band and the comic’s creative team head over to the Dark Horse Comics booth (#2615) from 3pm – 4pm. If you’re prowling for cool swag, limited edition posters will be available at each signing opportunity (see each booth for details).
Slayer: Repentless #1 will thrash its way onto shelves in December 2016, so you’ve got plenty of time to pick up Repentless (the album) and check out its accompanying music videos!
