The rights for what film studio owns which Marvel character, is more complicated than unknotting Reed Richards after a drunken night. However, director of Guardians of the Galaxy, James Gunn, reveals a race which can be used, Skrulls.
“Some specific Skrulls are at Fox. But the Skrulls as a whole are co-owned,” Gunn said in a tweet.
So who are the Skrulls and why only some of them? The Skrulls are an alien race who are almost always villains. They have been at war with the Kree, which is Ronan’s race (bad guy from Guardians of the Galaxy). The reason Marvel does not own all the Skrulls is simply because they don’t own ones with names; like the Super-Skrulls who possess the powers of other Marvel characters.
The Skrulls are usually used as a race or an army rather than a few individual Skrulls. So Marvel owns the race. An interesting question is if Marvel owns any named Skrulls or if they if they own some are divided between the two companies.
An interesting possibility is introduced into the Marvel Cinematic Universe because of the Skrulls ability to shapeshift. Any character could be a Skrull. Star-Lord or even Groot could be a Skrull in disguise. So when fans start to freak about a sudden death or a hero giving in to the “dark side”, this ability allows the writers the chance to say “no it was a Skrull the whole movie.”Skrulls Could Appear in Marvel Films
The possibilities are endless with the Skrulls being involved. A mega event in the comic was Secret Invasion and involved Skrulls taking over the lives of heroes. Everyone could be a Skrull including their best friend. Who can be trusted? That could be a movie plot in the not too distant future.
Gunn revealing this information means almost certainly that Skrulls will be in the next Guardians of the Galaxy movie.
The Skrulls are a huge get and I can’t wait for how they will be used in the future of the MCU. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has a planned release date of May 5, 2017, so keep your eyes glued to the screen to see if the Skrulls appear.
